Vitamin B2 also commonly known as riboflavin is a water soluble
vitamin that is extremely important in maintaining a general good health of the body. Since it is water soluble, most of it is lost and a very small percentage of it is retained in the body. This implies that the vitamin needs to be replenished everyday through a balanced diet or by
vitamin B2 supplements and products if the diet does not include a reasonable portion of the vitamin.
Role of Vitamin B2
Vitamin B2 converts the carbohydrates that we consume into the fuel or energy that a body needs to perform its daily functions. Riboflavin also is responsible for the synthesis if amino acids and fats. They help in breaking down complex glucose molecules and fatty acids besides being an integral part of red blood cell production, body growth and energy production.
Vitamin B2 is known to prevent headaches arising due to migraine, rheumatoid arthritis and also reduces the occurrence of acne. When consumed with iron supplements, anemic patients show remarkable results. The body requires vitamin B6 to fight diseases as it strengthens the immune system. Combinations of this vitamin with other
vitamins such as niacin etc are effective in the treatment of diseases related to the nervous system such as Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.
Sources of Vitamin B2
Organ meat, mushrooms, leafy vegetables, almonds, soybeans, cheese whole grains, yeast, flour, milk and cereals are rich in the
vitamin B2. Riboflavin is lost when exposed to light for prolonged periods.
