Essential Oils

Do you feel like relaxing in a tub of hot water with some pleasant smell to soothe your nerves? Essential oils are the best thing you should turn to when you feel like relaxing. With an ethereal aroma, they are bound to make you feel good. Not only this, essential oils have healing properties. Essential oils carry a very distinct flavor which is unique of the plant from which they are derived. They by themselves do not have an particular name and carry the name of the plant from which they are extracted. For example, if the oil is extracted from jasmine, it is called ‘oil of jasmine’

Essential oil have a range of uses. They are used for flavoring in food items, in aromatherapy, perfumes, bath products and cosmetics. They are commonly used for an aroma bath which is believed to relax you and uplift your mood. It is a good soothing exercise at the end of a long day to use essential oils. Frankincense oil is another example of essential oil which is burnt in many households for its beautiful smell. Essential oils also have the property of disinfectants. It is perhaps for this reason that many people as part of their tradition especially in the south Asian region still burn aromatic oils in their homes.

Process of making Essential oils

The essential oils that are available in the market are distilled. Most of these extracts are from leaves, flowers, wood, bark, stems and roots. For example, sandal wood oil is derived from the bark of the sandal wood tree. Distillation of the oil is necessary so as to remove the impurities from the oil. Distillation is a single step process.

Use of essential oil in aromatherapy

Aromatherapy as discussed earlier is an alternate treatment process where the healing agent is the aroma from the essential oils. Many of them are used as mood enhancers while some may be used to keep pests and other small insects away. Adding a drop of your favorite essential oil to a bowl of warm water and inhaling it also relaxes your mind.

Using essential oils

Many people recommend consumption of essential oils. This is a very debatable issue and no such regulation has come about which affirms drinking essential oils to be safe. As natural as they may be, drinking them is a complete no. Even for treating skin ailments and headaches, check with your doctor before starting to use them. Keep essential oils away from pets as these are very dangerous for them. Cats especially are most affected and in some cases may even die when they come in contact with essential oils. Some people show an allergic reaction towards certain essential oils. For example, lavender oil is toxic to the skin even if it is mild.

Buying essential oils

Buy reputed brands. Essential oils are usually a little expensive. Beware of fraudulent traders who claim to be selling essential oils at cheap rates. They are most likely not to be an artificially flavored oil.
