In technical terminology,
Post Menopause is the period ‘after Menopause’ has occurred in a woman. That is, the phase of life after the last period of a woman’s reproductive cycle has got over.
Post Menopause, that means the cessation of menses in women, is a natural biological occurrence that results due to the non- functioning of the ovaries. They stop producing and releasing ovum or egg every month, and hence result in complete shutdown of the women’s reproductive system.
It is a natural cessation of women’s fertility period, which corresponds with alterations in various
hormonal levels in their body. The production of hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, and progestin whose function till now was to maintain the female reproduction cycle, starts to get erratic first and then eventually ceases in absolute terms.
Menopause occurs in women around the age of 51 years on an average, with 45- 55 being the wider range. As the result of fluctuating hormonal intensities due to the incidence of
menopause, women’s body shows various adaptive symptoms that can cause lot of inconvenience. Hot flashes, palpitations, along with psychological effects such as depression, mood swings, irritability, lack of concentration and anxiety are common.
The hormonal changes start to occur after the age of 35 years, resulting in erratic menstrual cycles, which eventually stop with the
Menopausal period setting in. Special care should be taken by women of this age to ensure that they intake sufficient dietary calcium in their meals as they get prone to the disease of osteoporosis, which is the depletion of calcium from bones.
