
Dill is a multipurpose herb, which belongs to the family of Apiaceae. It is an annual herb with short life span. The plant of this
dill herb is around 60 cm of height and has long leaves. It consists of white and yellow flowers and long seeds with a ridged surface. It bears the qualities of being an herb as well as a spice to enhance the flavor of a number of dishes. The Eastern countries of Europe are considered to be the origination points of this
dill herb. Apart from this, it is also grown in Western parts of Asia and Mediterranean regions. It is also known as Shubit in Semitic languages.
In countries speaking English, this herb is also famous with the name of
Dillby. However, it has other popular names as well, which include Shepu and Sowa.
How are Dill Plants Cultivated:
Dill plants are cultivated in the warm or hot climatic conditions. Thus, summer is the most apposite season for harvesting a good yield of this herb. It is strictly recommended to allow high intensity sunshine to fall on this plant cultivation to ensure proper growth. The soil used for cultivating the
dill plants must be rich and well-drained.
As soon as the seed starts ripening, the flower head is cut off the stalk to access the seeds. These
dill flower heads are stored in air tight containers, where the seed gets easily separated from the stem in the time period of one week.
Uses of Dill:
This natural herb has number of uses, as different parts of it may be used for multiple purposes:
- The dried leaves of this herb are known as dill weeds and are considered to exhibit the properties of an herb.
- The seeds obtained from this herb are used as spices in different parts of the world. There are many dishes, which are flavored by this spice. These seeds have the flavoring qualities equivalent to those of caraway.
- Dill leaves are also known for their aromatic qualities and thus, these are used for adding essence to a number of dishes gravlax and borscht.
- The fresh leaves of this herb may also be utilized in the preparation of a number of soups and pickles.
- The leaves, seeds and stems of this herb are also considered to provide dill oil, which may be used for a number of purposes.
It must be taken into account that fresh
dill leaves must be consumed, as dried leaves are prone to losing their aromatic qualities.
