Hemorrhoids are formed by the swelling of veins in the rectum. Internal hemorrhoids are the swellings that are found in the veins of the internal walls of anus. Internal hemorrhoids are covered with the columnar epithelium of anal mucosa and lack somatic sensory innervations. They bleed through the superior rectal vein and come into the portal system. Unless they bleed they cannot be felt. The bleeding cause’s pain and this makes the doctor diagnose the internal hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoid symptoms

The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoid is a painless bleeding. Bright blood can also be found in stool, toilet paper. Blood will also drip into the toilet. This bleeding does not last for too long. Other symptoms of internal hemorrhoids are a vague feeling of anal discomfort, a fullness feeling after a bowel movement. Hemorrhoids when left untreated, leads to a condition called prolapsed hemorrhoids. The untreated and worsened internal hemorrhoids swell extensively and bleed through the anus. At this stage the patient can feel the hemorrhoids from outside. Sometimes the swollen flesh will project out and can be forced to push it inside. If the hemorrhoids stay outside and cannot be pushed back, they may swell more and more. At this stage they get trapped outside the anus. This may require surgical procedure to remove this. Sometimes the patient may develop terrible itching all over the hemorrhoid. Many other diseases like colon cancer or rectal cancer also have similar symptoms. So the doctor should thoroughly diagnose the disease before any medication.

Causes of internal hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids develop because of the exertion of pressure on the hemorrhoid veins. This pressure is caused by various disorders and body conditions. The most common reason of internal hemorrhoids is the force exerted to move stool and other wrong bowel habits. Sitting in the same position without any movement for long hours will also exert pressure inside the hemorrhoid veins. Pregnancy is also common cause for the excess pressure inside the anal walls. Other reasons are ageing, chronic constipation, diarrhea, anal intercourse, cirrhosis, obesity, a high fat and low fiber diet. All these will exert pressure over the hemorrhoid veins. This leads them to swell and eventually break to bleed.

Internal hemorrhoid treatment

The internal hemorrhoid treatment includes the treatments for the hemorrhoid symptoms. This is done by relieving the pressure exerted on the hemorrhoid veins. Eating fiber rich food will lighten the bowel movements and soften the stools. Proper exercise will increase the mobility of the muscles and cause a relaxed and easy bowel movement. Taking warm baths several times a day will increase the comfort of the patient. For most of the patients the internal hemorrhoid symptoms decrease and the health improves after these treatments. Rarely when the disease worsens surgery may be necessary to remove the protruding hemorrhoid. Proper and timely treatment will improve the health and comfort of the patient.
