A human scalp contains many hair strands in different growth stages. Ninety percent of the hair will be in active phase and the remaining ten percent in resting phase. The hair strands in the resting phase falls after some days and new hair grows in its place. It is normal to lose some amount of hair daily. When this normal amount of hair loss exceeds to become uncontrollably high, a person starts to experience hair loss problems. Normally new hair grows at the place of old fallen hair. Hair thinning occurs also when this growth ceases to happen.

Hair loss is caused by many reasons like stress, hormonal changes, mal nutrition, ageing etc. Stress is the most common these days. Hair loss and stress are interrelated. Stress is a condition when the biological or emotional circumstances demand a huge strength and a person can’t endure or satisfy the demand. Telogen Effluvium is a hair loss caused due to sudden stress. When a sudden stress occurs, the hair follicles will abruptly stop growing and fall into the resting phase. After two to three months the hair will fall down. This will appear like a huge hair fall problem. Normally the person will have recovered from the stress that was the reason of hair fall, long before the hair actually falls. This kind of hair loss is mostly experienced by women than men. This stress can be due to both emotional and physical reasons. Stress induces hormonal changes and this directly results in the hair loss problems.

Psychological effects of hair loss

Hair loss affects many people in many ways. Some people can take it in a simple way. But, hair loss can affect women in a devastating way. The self esteem deteriorates dramatically and makes the person self conscious. Most of the times doctors do not consider hair fall as a big problem. While hair loss itself is enough to put a person into an emotional distress, the avoidance from the part of family members, friends and even doctors about the emotional upheaval that a person undergoes is the worst part of it. This will lead to a terrible phase of anxiety and depression. The person continuously thinks about the hair loss and start seeking advice to cure it constantly. Hair loss if leads to baldness may create a kind of identity crisis and social phobia. The person may become disinterested in meeting people or going out. Many people think that they can’t give a good first impression and are not presentable. They also feel that they look older. The most important affect is on the self confidence of looks. But some men compare themselves with charming famous people who were bald headed and feel good about that. This is quiet rare but interesting how people cope with something that seems to be negative.
