Tendinitis is the condition caused by the inflammation of the tendons that fix your muscles to bones causing pain near muscle joints of knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists or hips. Tendinitis is also known by many names like tennis elbow, jumper's knee golfer's elbow, swimmer's shoulder etc. The two main causes of tendinitis include muscle strain or injury or diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

The Patellar tendonitis is the inflammation of the tendons or tissues that connects patella (knee cap) to the shin bone. These tendons play a vital role in flexing the knee and its inflammation might cause severe pain or swelling in the patellar region especially while kneeling or jumping. Tendinitis in Patellar caused mostly due to over strain from sporting activities, which involve jumping; hence it is also known as "jumper's knee."

The swelling of the tendon at the rear of the ankle is known as Achilles tendonitis and this condition could occur due to muscle overstrain or lack of suppleness of muscles. It is common among middle aged athletes. The main tendinitis symptom is the nagging pain at the backside of the heel, where the tendon is attached to the bone. Patients are likely to suffer pain after when they walk first in the morning or getting up after long hours of inactivity.

Rotator cuff tendonitis, also known as Swimmer's shoulder, Pitcher's shoulder or Tennis shoulder is the swelling of the tendons in the shoulder region. The rotator cuff joins the head of the arm bone into the shoulder blade and its inflammation might result in severe pain and is common is tennis players or swimmers who need to lift their arms over their head.

Calcific tendonitis is caused due to the deposition of calcium on the rotator cuff tendons and is more common in middle aged people and diabetic patients. The exact cause of calcific tendonitis is not known and the condition is found to improve automatically without any treatment within a few weeks.

DeQuervain's tendinitis is the inflammation of the wrist tendons that help to stretch the thumb sideways. Severe pain in the wrist or thumb in certain positions or during specific wrist motions is the symptom. Awkward twisting or pulling of the wrist could result in DeQuervain's tendonitis; however many a time no specific reasons could be found. The condition occurs due to the inflammation of two tendons at the constricted point of the first dorsal compartment, as they extend from the forearm to the thumb.

Normally all these forms of tendinitis could be treated by taking adequate rest and placing ice packs. Pain relievers like Ibuprofen or aspirin can reduce the swelling and pain. Severe conditions of tendinitis might require steroid injections, physical therapy or surgery.
